The Ehret
family name originated
from the name Erhard, made popular by the holy bishop of Ratisbonne, who
was especially revered in Alsace. St. Erhard made a contribution to St. Odile’s miraculous recovery. Odile, Alardic duke’s daughter, was born blind. Protected from her father’s anger, who hadn’t accepted her handicap, she was baptized at Beaume-les-Dames by Bishop Erhard, who happened to be passing through this town. During her baptism, Odile miraculously recovered her sight. Therefore, it’s not surprising that one can find many branches and lives of this name in Alsace, with its variation Erhart or Erhard. Other variations found on the web: Errett, Erret, Eret,Ehreth. What is the connection with our patronymic? Only time will tell. The birthplace of Ehrets’ family is located in Masevaux’s valley, in a village named Kirchberg where one can find Erharts until 1515. Later, the Erhart name changed to Ehret. During the 16th and 18th centuries, Ehrets originating from Masevaux’s valley settled in St.-Amarin’s adjoining valley, especially in a town named Willer-Sur-Thur (the birthplace of my family line) and in Mollau. Other family members settled in Rammersmatt, Friesen Herberstrass, Seppois-le-Haut. In 1632, Thiebaut Ehret was mayor of Bruebach, in Mulhouse’s area. That’s why Louis the 14th’s heralds assigned him arms "from sky-blue" at a sable or silver clock, surmounted by a D and an E on sable. We’d like to thank Mr. Andre Ganter Families History Departemental Center’s director for his collaboration, with a special thought for Father Francois Antoine Behra, who supplied us with many irreplaceable documents. The purpose of our site is to bring together, under the same banner, all of the researchers and the people named Ehret, in order to complete the genealogic tree of our big family.
